Viral V. Acharya has been appointed deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment. He will hold the office for a period of three years. Acharya is the CV Starr Professor of Economics in the department of finance at New York University Stern School of Business. He is the program director for financial economics and a research affiliate at the Center for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), a director of Western Finance Association and the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE). An Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay alumnus, Acharya completed B. Tech in computer science and engineering in 1995 and Ph.D. in finance from NYU-Stern in 2001. He is the current PhD coordinator in the finance department at Stern. There are three deputy governors at present – S.S. Mundra, N.S. Vishwanathan and R. Gandhi.
