Retail investors should enter stock market via MFs- SEBI

SEBI chairman U K Sinha advised retail investors that they should ideallt enter stock market through institutions such as mutual funds and pension funds. Pointing out the lesser participation of retail investors in some of the recent IPOs, Sinha said he does not mind if retail investors do not participate in the IPOs because he would rather like them to participate through institutional investors. He was speaking at ‘Towards a fin-powered India’ conclave at Mumbai organized by investment planning and advising platform 5nance.com. For large number of small investors and uninformed investors, SEBI’s position is that they should not enter the market directly, he said. Sinha also said SEBI has formed a team headed by Nandan Nikekani to show how best technology can be used to sell mutual funds. This way, investors can buy funds with the same ease as they buy phones online, he said. He said the fund houses have not done enough to promote direct plans.
