An RTI reply from the Reserve Bank of India has revealed that scheduled commercial banks have a huge Rs 8.99 lakh crore gross NPAs as of 31 December 2017. In the case of urban cooperative banks, the NPA figure stood at Rs 21,297 crore. The central bank does not have information regarding DCCBs, the central bank’s response to a query by an RTI activist reveals. The activist has been advised to approach Nabard to obtain the information about DCCBs. The activist had also sought records of complaints received by RBI against various banks, and number of persons removed from banks for facing corruption charges and the response from RBI stated that over 1.73 lakh complaints were received, with the highest complaints against State Bank of India – 46,240 lodged in about 14 months. This was followed by HDFC Bank ICICI Bank and Axis Bank. The response also stated that 4 state cooperative banks and 34 DCCBs had violated KYC norms, but no penalty was imposed on them.
