A system is being developed and refined in a government-funded research organization in Hong Kong which is capable of facial and Chinese character recognition. The organization, Applied Science and Technology Research (ASTRI), said the system could soon be deployed in the banking sector to improve cyber security and efficiency. Chief executive of ASTRI Franklin Tong Fuk-kay said the institute had been working on improving existing facial recognition technology, which can identify a person based on his or her facial features. He said the moment a person enters the bank, the bankers can recognise who he is and immediately take him to a room. The private banker and not the retail banker will talk to him, he added. Tong said right now for one to access a bank account there is need for two IDs – one ID is the PIN code and perhaps the other ID could be from biometrics, or facial recognition – from the eyes or some other behaviourial authentication. The institute has improved existing facial recognition methodology by adding sentiment analysis, which could detect a person’s expression
