The Digital Seva Kendras or common service centers (CSCs) have received the license to operate Bharat Bill Payment System from the Reserve Bank of India. There are over 1.5 lakh CSCs in the country. These centers at present undertake several tasks, printing of Aadhaar numbers, booking rail tickets, providing assisted ecommerce etc in the rural parts of the country. There are banks, telecom companies and wallet operators, which have applied for BBPS, which is proposed as an integrated system that will provide ‘anytime anywhere’ payment options to customers by pulling all bills and payment options onto a single platform. The platform will be run and managed by the National Payments Corporation of India. It will initially accept utility bill payments such as electricity, water, gas, telephone and direct-to-home services and will later include other repetitive payments including school and university fees and municipal taxes.
