The Reserve Bank of India has asked banks to make use of credit information provided by Central Repository of Information on Large Credits (CRILC) for opening current accounts. The central banks feels this will help improve credit discipline and reduce NPAs. Banks have been told not to confine their examination to seeking NOCs from the bank where the customer had credit facilities as per his declaration but make use of the information about him in CRILC. RBI said in a notification that banks should verify from the data available in CRILC database whether the customer is availing of credit facility from another bank. Further banks may also seek NOC from the drawee bank where the initial deposit to current account is made by way of a cheque. The RBI has set up CRILC to collect, store, and disseminate data on all borrowers’ credit exposures.
