RBI governor Raghuram Rajan met representatives of select banks to understand the asset quality situation in these banks in the light of the directive by the central bank to clean their balance sheets by March 2017. A statement issued by the RBI said the bankers from the public and private sector met Rajan and during the meeting they discussed various issues including the asset quality of banks and the way forward on improving the quality of bank balance sheets. The discussions will continue, the statement added. Arundhati Bhattacharya, chairman, State Bank of India, who attended the meeting said the discussion was on what steps should be taken going forward. The stressed assets of banks as a percentage of gross advances moved up to 11.1% as on March 2015.
