Bandhan Financial Services will initially set up some 600 branches to begin its banking operations next year. It has decided to operate in the rural and unbanked areas of the country unlike other private banks which are urban-oriented. About 80% of the branches will be in the rural pockets, said Chandra Shekhar Ghos, CMD of Bandhan Financial Services. The operations may begin in April or May 2015, he added. As a microfinance company, Bandhan has 55 lakh borrowers and Ghosh said that it would need about 600-700 branches to service this existing clientele from day one.
