Bank Raykat Jakarta has a satellite of its own launched in June, thus becoming the first bank to have its own satellite in space. The satellite was launched from the northern coast of French Guiana in South America. BRI is Indonesia’s biggest provider of small loans and its customers are spread across some 3,000 km. Hence, the bank feels satellite communications will deliver huge savings in operating costs. The BRIsat was carried by an Ariane 5 rocket into space. It is not in a geo-stationary position above the country.
