Under the visionary leadership of Raj Sharma, Executive Vice President – Facilities & Administration, TATA AIG General Insurance has embarked on a transformative journey toward sustainable IT practices. Their commitment to energy efficiency, renewable energy adoption, responsible e-waste management, and employee engagement is noteworthy and a powerful example for the industry to emulate.
Enhancing Energy Efficiency
Raj Sharma emphasizes that TATA AIG has transitioned from desktops to exclusively acquiring laptops. This strategic move has resulted in an impressive 80% reduction in electricity consumption compared to traditional desktops. Most laptops are equipped with an energy optimizer tool, allowing customized settings related to graphics and battery usage for energy-efficient operation.
The company actively encourages original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and IT supplier partners to use environmentally friendly packaging materials for IT peripherals. “At Tata AIG, we review and encourage OEMs of our IT supplier partners to use environmentally friendly packaging materials for IT peripherals. To support a green environment, we prioritize the production of boxes with low carbon emissions. The carbon footprint savings achieved are recorded and presented as part of the vendor review process,” reveals Sharma.
E-Waste Management
TATA AIG ensures that e-waste is handed over only to recyclers authorized by the Pollution Control Board. These certified recyclers provide a green certificate, confirming compliance with environmental norms. Proper e-waste management is a crucial aspect of the organization’s commitment to sustainability.
Employee Engagement
The insurer has implemented a managed print solution with a secure printing module to minimize paper wastage. No printer is left with unattended printouts, reducing unnecessary paper usage. Additionally, printers require Active Directory (AD) authentication, further optimizing electricity consumption.
Tech Partners
TATA AIG collaborates indirectly with tech partners who adhere to environmental norms at their manufacturing plants. Dell, HP, and eWaste Recyclers (such as Bharat Recycling and Techcheff) contribute by maintaining low or zero carbon footprints and responsibly disposing of e-waste. “Our commitment to sustainability extends to our IT suppliers, who use environmentally friendly packaging materials and prioritize boxes produced with low carbon emissions,” emphasizes Sharma.
Green Milestone Reports
TATA AIG’s IT department produces comprehensive reports for management and regulators, highlighting the organization’s green milestones, such as a Green Dashboard that visually represents key metrics, including trees saved and CO2 emissions reduced through initiatives like Print Management, Water Saving Programs, Green Gas for air conditioning, and the shift to Digital Documents and Agreements.
Additionally, these reports highlight innovative approaches to sustainability with IoT solutions and the adoption of lithium batteries, along with a detailed CO2 emissions report quantifying the reduction in tonnes attributed to each initiative.
Award-Winning Efforts
TATA AIG proudly holds the highest rating (GEM 5) from the Associated Chambers of Commerce (ASSOCHAM). This prestigious certification recognizes the company’s dedication to environmentally friendly practices across interior design, energy efficiency, water conservation, safety, indoor air quality, and natural lighting in corporate and back offices.
The company’s green journey, guided by Raj Sharma’s vision, exemplifies responsible corporate citizenship. Their commitment to sustainability extends beyond words, making a tangible impact on the environment and inspiring others to follow suit.
