RBI mandates migration to ‘.bank.in’ domain to boost cybersecurity

To strengthen cybersecurity and bolster trust in the digital banking ecosystem, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has directed all banks across the country to migrate their websites to the exclusive ‘.bank.in’ domain by October 31, 2025.
The directive applies to all Commercial Banks, Primary (Urban) Co-operative Banks, State Co-operative Banks, and District Central Co-operative Banks. The move follows an announcement in the RBI’s Statement on Developmental and Regulatory Policies dated February 7, 2025, under the theme “Enhancing Trust in the Financial Sector through ‘.bank.in’ and ‘.fin.in’ domains.”
Aimed at curbing rising instances of digital payment fraud, the initiative is expected to enhance the cybersecurity framework and improve public confidence in digital financial services. The Institute for Development and Research in Banking Technology (IDRBT) has been designated as the exclusive registrar for the ‘.bank.in’ domain. This responsibility has been conferred upon IDRBT by the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI), operating under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). Banks have been instructed to initiate their registration process by contacting IDRBT at sahyog@idrbt.ac.in.
