Career aspirations are not inherently different

Ms. Harpreet Sandhu, Head, Human Resources, IMGC, is develops and defines the human resource and communication strategy for enhancing the core HR processes to meet business requirements. A key facet of her role includes moulding the unique culture at IMGC in line with the company’s values and vision. Harpreet brings with her an experience of over 17 years, predominantly in the field of financial services, which includes HR business partnering, mergers & acquisition, talent acquisition, organization design and effectiveness and change management.

Diversity Ratio

IMGC is an equal-opportunity employer that hires talent based on the skills and competencies required for the job. IMGC has a diverse workforce in various areas. Harpreet Sandhu informs: “We have female leaders in some of our key sales roles. 20% of our leadership talent is diverse. The front-line diversity ratio is 22%, while in middle management we have 46% of women colleagues. IMGC diversity ratio stands at 26.”

Domain Experts, Competencies

In many companies there is a number of women employees who have been domain experts in areas such as risk management, digital lending, analytics, etc. As a financial organization risk policy and analytics are functions critical to business. Harpreet specifies: “36% of our staff in these functions is diverse. Companies are expanding their reach to female talent through targeted recruitment efforts and career promotions and career restart after a maternity-induced absence. The employee resource groups within corporations offer women support, mentorship, and networking opportunities, as well as contribute to the creation of a welcoming environment.

Career Aspirations Differ

According to a recent analysis by Spectrum Talent Management, a one-stop shop for global-local human talent management, the hiring ratio of women to men in HR has historically been greater and is currently at a 60:40, favouring women. Harpreet believes that both genders may have similar or different aspirations depending on individual interests, abilities, and experiences. She argues: “Career aspirations of women, men are not inherently different. Gender-based stereotypes and societal expectations can influence career choices, but it is not determined by gender. Ultimately, career aspirations of individuals are based on their interests, passions, and abilities, regardless of gender. Over the years the ecosystem has helped women work toward their career goals and inspire the next generation.”

Family-Friendly Policies

Organizations are finally recognising the value of diversity and inclusion in the workplace and taking concrete steps to level the playing field for women. Harpreet enlists the changes taking place all around: “Many organizations have implemented family-friendly policies, such as flexible work schedules and paid parental leave, to help women better balance their work and personal lives. Furthermore, they are now providing training and development programs tailored specifically to women to help them advance professionally and achieve leadership positions. Furthermore, the number of women-focused employee resource groups within corporations has increased.”

Recommendations for young girls to make a career

Harpreet Sandhu, Head – HR at IMGC, offers very valuable recommendations for young girls, who want to work, and make a career in their life.

Set clear goals and educate yourself: Determine what you want to achieve and work towards it. Plan and break down larger goals into smaller, more manageable steps. It’s also important to create depth in areas of your interest, so try to be a specialist before you take up generalist roles.

Network and build relationships: Building a network of contacts and making connections with people in your industry can help you advance in your career. Attend events, join professional organizations, and be active on LinkedIn.

Seek mentorship: Having a mentor can provide guidance, advice, and support as you navigate your career. Seek out individuals, who have experience in your field and are willing to share their knowledge with you.

Be persistent & confident: Don’t give up when faced with challenges and rejections. Believe in yourself and your abilities and keep pushing forward.
