The government has appointed non-executive chairmen at 3 public sector banks. Charan Singh, the RBI chair professor at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, has been appointed as the non-executive chairman of Punjab & Sind Bank, Anjali Bansal, former managing director of TPG Private Equity, as chairman of Dena Bank and Tapan Ray, former corporate affairs secretary, at Central Bank of India. The appointments have been made based on the suggestions of Banks Board Bureau headed by Bhanu Pratap Sharma. The government had decided to separate the responsibility of running the public sector banks between chairman and managing directors for better functioning. The 3 banks are facing problems relating to high levels of NPAs.
