FM Sitharaman narrates India’s Digital Public Goods story to global audience

At an interactive session organised at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman spoke about ‘India’s unique Digital Public Goods (DPG)’ story and multiplier effects created through the interlinkages of technology, finance and governance.

The FM said that initiatives have been taken at the local level to educate people for digitization of payments in their own language. “With infrastructure being laid for digital technology to reach everywhere, and people being trained at local level in local language, the initial inhibitions are all removed. India is talking to different countries to make Rupay acceptable in their nations,” she added.

The FM also attended the 4th G20 finance ministers and central bank governors’ meeting G20FMCBG, in Washington DC on the sidelines of the IMF-WB Annual Meetings 2022.

The FM is making her interventions in several sessions during the two-day meeting. In the first session, she spoke on #GlobalEconomy, focusing on India’s economic development, global risks and policy responses.

Reflecting on India’s recovery story, the FM shared that India has maintained accelerated growth momentum, after the contraction in 2020, by balancing the immediate needs of the economy with long-term structural reforms. She called for enhanced policy cooperation and sharing of experiences to deal with downside risks and their spillovers.
