Some five lakh employees and officers in banks are expected to join the All India General Strike on 2 September to protest against the Central Government’s anti-people economic policies and anti-worker labor reforms. Employees and officers working in various public sector banks, private banks, foreign banks, regional rural banks and cooperative banks will join the strike. According to C.H. Venkatachalam, general secretary, All India Bank Employees’ Association, the strike call has been given to protest against the various policies and proposals of the government. The government is attempting to push through reforms agenda aimed at privatization of banks and consolidation and merger, according to the association.
