Sri Lanka’s Commercial Bank of Ceylon said customers withdrew a record Rs 2.05 billion from ATMs on 11 April a new daily high in the run up to a traditional New Year holiday. The festival drawdown beat the bank’s previous record of Rs 1.79 billion, set on 10 April 2013, the bank said in a statement. The average size of the withdrawal had gone up 60% to Rs 10,400 rupees from Rs 6,500 a year earlier, the bank said. The bank’s 585 ATMs make up the largest such network owned by a single bank in the country. The number transactions processed was 245,000 lower than a previous record of 325,000 which the bank attributes to higher withdrawal limits offered. A customer can withdraw Rs 40,000 per transaction.
