The Reserve Bank of India and the UIDAI have allowed Airtel Payments Bank and Airtel to onboard new customers using Aadhaar eKYC. The two entities had in September 2017 been prohibited from using Aadhaar following allegations that they were using Aadhaar-based SIM verification of customers to open payments bank accounts without their informed consent. A spokesperson for Airtel said Airtel Payments Bank has received requisite approvals from the RBI to start onboarding new customers. The bank also received necessary permissions from the UIDAI too to resume the onboarding of customers using Aadhaar based e-KYC.
