ABN Amro Bank is now allowing prospective customers to sign up for new accounts with their smartphone. The prospective customer will just have to take a selfie portrait using their smartphone and make a payment of euro 0.01 to open an account. A senior official of the bank said the bank sees smartphone use among its customers grow by the day and to accommodate them, it is now offering the opportunity to sign up with just the phone. Becoming a customer using a mobile device is quick and efficient, as one can do so without visiting a bank branch, he said. The bank’s mobile banking app is currently used 57 million times a month. In September 2015, the app underwent a major upgrade to allow the retrieval of credit card data alongside current account features.
