Thailand’s Government Savings Bank lost some 12.29 million baht from its 21 ATMs as hackers intercepted the machines in Bangkok and other southern provinces on 1 August. The thefts have forced the bank to suspend services of about 4000 ATMs indefinitely. The malware attacks were deemed to have been targeting single machines to remain undetected for as long as possible. It is unknown how long the affected machines had been infected. According to Microsoft, among the 25 countries in the world that are most targeted with malware attacks, Thailand has been identified as one of the key countries within Asia-Pacific. The bank’s director Chartchai Payuhanaveechai said the bank had suspended the services of the Scottish-made ATMs on8 August after officials found out that 21 of the ATMs had been hacked with the use of malware program.
