PNC Financial Services Group is upgrading its 9000 ATMs to enable chip card based transactions. The bank expects the new ATMs will improve security as chip cards are harder to counterfeit than traditional magnetic stripe-only cards. The new ATMs will be rolled out in September. According to an official of the bank, beginning 1October, the fraud liability for MasterCard will shift to the ATM owner, making it essential that all of the machines are up to date. PNC is taking an additional step of adding protective keypad shields to many of its ATMs to help hide customer PINs. Other improvements include an enhanced screen with buttons that are easier to read and personalized options to speed through usage.
