N.S. Vishwanathan, ED at RBI, is the new deputy governor of the central bank. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has cleared his appointment. He will succeed H. R. Khan, who is retiring on 3 July. Khan had a five-year term as the deputy governor in charge of financial markets and infrastructure, external investments and operations, payment and settlements, information technology, foreign exchange and internal debt management. The other EDs who were interviewed for the post were M. Patra, Deepali Pant Joshi, Chandan Sinha and Deepak Mohanty. The RBI has 4 deputy governors: two internal appointments (Khan and R Gandhi), one commercial banker (former Bank of Baroda chairman S.S. Mundra) and an economist to head the monetary policy department (Urjit Patel).
